Welcome to Year 1, Week 9, Lesson 1.9.2. Today we will work on your English listening and reading comprehension via 3 of our Conversation Topics for English Learners activities.

Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Shopping happens everywhere on Earth. If you want to shop, you need to communicate. Imagine you’re in San Francisco, in the United States of America, and you’re having conversations in English about shopping. What would you say? What would others say to you? Here are a few suggestions:
— You’re at a shoe store, and you find a pair of shoes you like, but can’t find your shoe size. What would you say to the shoe salesperson? What would the salesperson say to you?
— You’re at the world famous Ghirardelli store in San Francisco. You want to buy some chocolate for your family, but you don’t know what to choose. What would you ask the salesperson? What would the salesperson say to you?
— You’ve been saving money and doing lots of research on new cars. You know the carmaker, the model, and the color of the car you want to buy. What would you tell the car salesperson? What would the car salesperson tell you?
Shopping in the United States of America can be a pleasant experience when you communicate clearly and effectively in English. What would you buy right now if you had money to spend?

Part 2: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Most people depend on transportation to go to work, go to school, go shopping, or go on vacation. Today’s conversation topic is “Transportation”. Imagine you’re in an English speaking country where you need to have conversations about transportation. What would you do? What would you say? What would others say to you? Here are a few suggestions:
— You’re trying to get on a public bus, but you need to pay your bus fare first. What would you say to the bus driver? What would the bus driver say to you?
— You’re on a train on your vacation. You’re admiring the views and share your thoughts with others in your cabin. What would you say? What would the other travelers say?
— Your car doesn’t start and you have a big job interview in one hour. You call a taxi company. What would you say? What would the taxi company receptionist say?
Since so many of us have to travel large distances, we all need dependable transportation. What modes of transportation do you use?

Part 3: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again. Finally, add a comment about what you learned from Parts 1, 2, and 3 in the comments section below.

Have you ever compared two things at once and made a decision to pick the best choice? Today’s conversation topic is “Comparing.” Imagine you’re having a conversation about comparing different choices. What would you say? What would others say to you? Here are a few suggestions:
— You’re at school and your final exam grades just got posted on the wall. You compare your grades with one of your colleagues. What would you say? What would your colleague say?
— You’re at a store shopping for shirts with your best friend. You both found shirts you like and are comparing them? What would you say? What would your best friend say?
— You’re at a basketball game with your date, and you compare the basketball players on the different teams. What would you say? What would your date say?
Comparing is part of our every day critical thinking. We reach better decisions when we compare similar things.

  1. Hello, good morning.
Next weekend I’ll be shopping at a big mall with my wife. I’ll be buying a pair of shoes, black and size 10. Then we’ll be going to buy some special chocolate for a birthday’s gift. We won’t be spending so much money because we’ve been saving money by six months for some family holydays.
I depend of transportation to go everywhere on many occasions. I’ll be going to downtown next weekend and I’ll be getting on a public bus near of my house. I’ll need cash because I’ll be paying my bus fare. I’m planning my vacation to USA. I’ll be travelling by train from Florida to California, and I’ll be sharing my thoughts with my wife who is coming with me. I’ll be getting a job interview in Irvine, California, and I’ll be calling a taxi company for my transportation.
I’ve compared much things on many occasions, and in the future I’ll be doing the same because it is very useful to make decisions.
    Thank you,
    Nelson from Vzla.

    – Yes, I said.
I’m looking for a pair of brown shoes size 8.
    – The salesperon : Let’s see. Here is
    a nice brown one.
    What do you think?
    – OK. I love it.
    It fits perfectly.
    – How mutch is it?
    – the salesperson :$60 with tax.
    – perfect, I’lleverywhere take it.
I want to buy some chocolate from the world famous Ghirardelli in San Francisco. The salesperson helps me to choose the best from the top five brands.
The quality of this chocolate really is superb.
    I’m grateful for the salesperson.
On my way to the bus stop, I met my friend.
I asked him : should we take a taxi or a bus to go home?
My friend : let’s take a bus. It’s impossible to get a taxi during the rush hour.
The travel on train is always more comfortable than the car and the bus. Because the train went between mountains, rivers, caves and green fields with very nice landscapes. People want share thoughts about the nature.
I decided to buy a car with the money I saved next year. I prefer that will be an electric car to reduce the pollution.
We have to know the advantages and disadvantages of things before to compare and coneverse about them.

    Warm regards

    Mongi

  5. Hello. This is Wilber from Nicaragua. I will answer these two questions: What would you buy right now if you had money to spend? What modes of transportation do you use?

Most of the time I ride my bicycle everywhere I go. However, when I have to travel to large distances I can´t do that. So I take a bus or a small bus (with capacity for 17 passengers). These can take me to neighbors cities or to near places where I can not ride my bicycle. So If I had money to spend, I would by a motorcycle, I’ll get to some places faster, I will not sweat so much and it is a vehicle that does not consume much fuel. It´s one my goals that I hope to achieve no later than the next year.

The modes of transportation available in my city are buses (big and small); taxis, some small trucks with a tent and two side benches (people who can´t get a seat will travel standing) and we also have caponeras , these are tricycles with two front tires, under a small tent and a bench for two or three passengers. After the tent there´s the rider.

    No trains in my city.

    Thank you.

I’m sorry, the size you want has been sold out. I will order this size and the waiting time will be two weeks. (the salesperson)
Ok, I will come again and please leave a pair for me.
Situation 2 : Excuse me, I want some chocolate bars for my family as a return gift. Could you suggest me some brand? I have no idea what to choose among these. (me)
These all are very good. Among them, I may suggest you this one. Here, it is made of oak and it is good for all especially, the older and the children. (the salesperson)
