Conversation Topics for English Learners: Pastimes

What are you favorite pastimes? What do you enjoy doing when you have free time? Today’s conversation topic is “Pastimes”. Imagine having a conversation about favorite pastimes with others. What would you say? What would others say to you? Here are a few suggestions:
— You’re at a park and are talking about your favorite sports with your date. What would you say? What would your date say to you?
— You’re going on vacation and talking with your family about doing some things you enjoy. What would you say? What would you family say?
— You’re planning the weekend with your friends. You talk about favorite things to do. What would you say? What would your friends say?
Many people love their weekends, holidays, and vacations because they have a chance to enjoy their favorite pastimes. What pastimes would you like to enjoy?

PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue below in English, then translate it and read it in your primary language.

Dialog 28: Hobbies

  • Ryan:   I’m so happy this week of midterm exams is finished.
  • Tyler:    Same here. I’m looking forward to relaxing in the mountains this weekend. I’ve planned a little hike in the woods. And I’m gonna take a canoe trip down the river if the weather cooperates.
  • Ryan:   Oh, fun! I’m going to Michigan. I’m taking my camera because fall is coming fast. The leaves are already turning all shades of red and orange. It will be awesome.
  • Tyler:    Next time you go there, I’ll join you. I’ve heard Michigan is a great place to go canoeing.

    In my free time I like to walk with friends and go to a restaurant, theatre, swimming pool, shopping or visit a church or basilica. If it’s hot I like to go to the sea or lake.
    It’s very important that you spend your free time relaxing. We need to relax.

    It has been very exciting to apply principles and law of physics in all aspects of daily life, from technology derived from them.
    Another very important pastimes is sharing with our family and friends. Always, for dinner, a picnic, or a vacation is essencial; it is a good opportunity to grow and enjoy our existences

    Favorite Pastimes
    I have spent my entire life as a teacher. After my retirement, I joined an NGO ( Behbud Association Saidpur village ) This is a charitable organization. currently, my Pastime is to look after the schools. So I like and love to help the teachers as well as the students. I make worksheets, lesson plans and collect the recourses for them. That’s why I am improving my English language too. I believe in the learning process till the end of my life.

    Frank: It is a great idea, it would be excellent to practice basket, swimming and soccer, would you?
    Me: yes!, that will help us stay in shape and not gain weight on vacation.
    Frank: Awesome!,, then..let’s start this afternoon.
