Lesson 1.13.2 – American English Lessons With Maestro Sersea

Welcome to Year 1, Week 13, Lesson 1.13.2. Today we will work on your English listening and reading comprehension via 3 of our Conversation Topics for English Learners activities.

Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Hello English Learners. Have you ever ordered breakfast in English before? Today’s conversation topic for English Learners is “Ordering Breakfast”. Imagine you’re in the city of New York, ordering breakfast. What would you say? What would others say? Here are some suggestions:
— You’re at a fast food restaurant, in your car, in the drive-through. What would you order? What would the cashier ask you?
— You’re at a restaurant with some friends. You all decide to order breakfast together. What would you and your friends say? What would the server ask?
— You’re at a coffee shop, ordering a croissant and a coffee for breakfast. What would you say? What would the cashier ask?
Ordering breakfast can be a fun experience when you clearly communicate in the English language and show common courtesy.

Part 2: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Have you ever been in an accident or witnessed an accident? What did you do? What did others do? Today’s conversation topic for English Learners is “Near Accident”. Imagine you’re witnessing a near accident. What would you say? What would others say? Here are a few suggestions:
— A boy is riding his bicycle on the street in front of your home. He takes his hands off the handle, the bicycle loses control, and it almost hits a moving car on the street. You go see if the boy is ok and talk to him. What would you say? What would the boy say?
— You’re sitting at the bus stop, talking to a colleague, when you see a sportscar speeding and changing lanes often. Suddenly, a car pulls in front of the sports car, and you see the sportscar stop suddenly. What would you say to your colleague? What would your colleague say to you?
— You’re driving on the way to work, when all of a sudden, the car in front of you stops. You veer around the car, just in time, avoiding to hit it. You spilled your coffee all over your work shirt. What would you say to your boss? What would your boss tell you?
It is quite often that accidents happen, so whenever you witness a near accident instead of a real accident, that’s a sign of good luck.

Part 3: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again. Finally, add a comment about what you learned from Parts 1, 2, and 3 in the comments section below.

Hello, English Learners. In American culture, time is considered very important. Most Americans pay close attention to schedules and due-dates. Today’s conversation topic is “Arrival Time”. Imagine you’re having a conversation about time with others. What would you say? What would others say? Here are a few suggestions.
— You’re at an airport, waiting for a friend to land. You don’t know the exact time the plane will land so you ask an airport attendant for help. What would you ask? What would the airport attendant say?
— You’re at home, organizing for a party. You’ve invited your guests to come at 8PM, and you’re waiting for them to arrive. What would you tell your guests when they arrive? What would your guests tell you?
— You’ve called a taxi service to come pick you up from your house. The taxi is late, and the taxi driver rings your door bell. What would you tell the taxi driver? What would the taxi driver tell you?
Whenever you talk with others about being late, please remember to show courtesy, as there are many valid reasons that can keep one from being on time.
