Welcome to Year 1, Week 5, Lesson 1.5.3. Today we will work on your English conversation and reading skills. We begin dialogues 13-15 from our English course, American English Conversations 1. Designed for beginners, these dialogues help English Learners improve their comprehension and communication skills. You’re encouraged to read along and pronounce together with the video below. Once you finish, don’t forget to share what you’ve learned via the comments section below.
PART 1 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogues below in English, then translate them and read them in your primary language.
Dialog 13: Health
- Jane: I hear you’ve been ill.
- Cathy: Well, I had the flu for a couple of weeks, but I’m fine now.
- Jane: You’re looking well. By the way, did you hear about Mrs. Jackson?
- Cathy: No, What about her?
- Jane: She had such a bad case of the flu that they had to take her to the hospital.
- Cathy: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that!
Dialog 14: Sports
- Phil: Say, what’s your favorite sport?
- Jack: Hmmm… it’s hard to say. I like golf a lot—but I guess I like tennis better.
- Phil: Do you play much tennis?
- Jack: Yes, quite a bit. How about a game sometime?
- Phil: Sorry. I’m strictly a spectator —football, baseball, basketball, golf…I watch them all.
Dialog 15: Asking Directions
Street noises
- Marilyn: Excuse Me. Could you tell me which way Dobson’s bookstore is?
- Nancy: Yes, it’s that way. You go two blocks, then turn left. It’s on the corner opposite the post office.
- Marilyn: Thanks I’ve only been in town a few days, so I really don’t know my way around yet.
- Nancy: Oh, I know how you feel. We moved here a year ago, and I still don’t know where everything is.
PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Watch, read-along, and pronounce with the video below a minimum of 2-3 times. After you finish, let us know what you learned via the comments section below.
Hello, I’m Nelson.
In this lesson we use the Present Perfect Tense. These are some sentences in the lesson:
I hear you’ve been ill.
I’ve only been in town few days.
In both case the action is still happening in the moment when the person is talking.
Good lesson.
Thanks.
Note: these audios are very good to improve the listening skill.
Keep up the great work, Nelson! 🙂

Thank you very much Maestro Sersea.
You’re welcome, Danijela. 🙂
Hello, teacher!
In this lesson I have learned how to use the Present Perfect Tense, the Past Tense, the present CONTINUES.
Also I have learned new words and new phrases like :
She had such a bad case of the flu that they had to take her to the hospital.
By the way.
quite a bit. How about a game sometime.
Thank you so much!
faster/ slower pace
Good job, Eta. I’m glad you’re learning English. 🙂
Thank you very much Maestro Sersea!
You’re welcome, Eta. 🙂
Hello Maestro Sersea, I just have a doubt.
In dialog 13, I think the correct form is use the expression in past simple tense and not in present simple tense:
I heard (not I hear) you’ve been ill.
Could you clarify this for me please?
I hear you’ve been ill is correct. You get the information now about something that happened in the past – makes sense. Your option makes sense as well. 🙂
Thank you, Maestro.
You are welcome, Nelson. 🙂
Well done. Really nice lesson. No boredom. Thanx Sir!
Shazia, thank you for staying motivated and working hard on learning English with us. 🙂
Very simple dialogues but they express the structure of the English Idiom. The dialogues are right to the point. We, foreigners, are afraid to guess how they talk and ask questions but the use are the same all over the world. We should get to understand the collocations americans use to express their interests about the things they’re looking for.
Thanks Mr. Sersea
Well done, Jose Luiz. I invite you to visit my new website on American English idioms: https://americanenglishidioms.com/list-of-american-english-idioms/
I’ll do it as soon as I get a free time, thanks
Hello!
I am satisfied with the lessons and conversations that you share with us, that help me a lot. This time I learned this new word “quite a bit”.
Thank you Maestro
Thank you for your kind words, Ana Veronica. I’m glad you’re making progress. 🙂
Thank you very much Maestro Sersea!
These dialogues are good for learning English
Dialogue 13 : Jane and Cathy are talking about their physical condition. But Cathy is fine now. Jane informed that Mrs. Jackson had a bad case . She had to take hospital.
Dialogue 14 : Phil and Jake are discussing about sports. Jake likes golf and tennis. He is a strictly spectator of some games. But Phil knows how to play tennis.
Dialogue 15 : Marilyn is a new comer in this town. So, she does not know the way of around yet. Nancy moved here a year ago. But she still does not where everything is .
