English Learners, for Formal Greetings and Farewells, imagine having a conversation with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, and employers using formal language. How would you start a conversation? What would you say?

Imagine recognizing an acquaintance at a restaurant you like. What would you say?

Imagine you’re on vacation and you notice one of your colleagues is sitting next to you, on the bus. What would you say?

Imagine you’re at a movie theater and that you notice your favorite teacher is sitting right next to you. What would you say?

Imagine you’re applying for a job and you’re interviewing for the first time with a potential employer. What would you say?

In American English, there is formal and informal language. We usually use informal language with family and friends, and use formal language with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, and employers.

Hello, English Learners. For Informal Greetings and Farewells, when you know someone very well and feel comfortable around them, you can use informal language. In English, we normally use informal language with family and friends. How would you start and end an informal conversation? What would you say?

Imagine meeting a close friend at the supermarket. What would you say?

Imagine meeting your cousin at the park. What would you say?

Imagine meeting your brother at the library of your school. What would you say?

Imagine waking up one early morning and greeting your mother who is preparing food in the kitchen. What would you say?

In American English, there is formal and informal language. We usually use informal language with family and friends, and use formal language with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, and employers.

Greetings, English Learners. During Formal Introductions, we normally introduce whoever we are together with, with the persons we meet and discuss with. This way, all the people feel welcome and connected to our discussion, and no one feels left out.

Imagine you’re at a party with your father, and you meet the mayor of your city. How would you introduce your father to the mayor? How would you introduce the mayor to your father?

Imagine you’re at a university with your sister and you meet your English professor. How would you introduce your sister to your professor? How would you introduce your professor to your sister?

Imagine you bring your parents to your job for the first time and you meet your boss. How would you introduce your parents to your boss? How would you introduce your boss to your parents?

It is of key importance that we introduce our companions with people we meet and discuss with. It is the polite thing to do.

  1. In part 1 I’m learning that we greetings and farewell in formal and informal way. We have a formal conversation with for example, acquaintances (this was a new word for me), colleagues, educators, and employers.
    In part 2, I’m learning that we can use informal language when we know the other person very well like family and friends.
    In part 3, I’m learning that there’s a polite thing to do when we are in a meeting and someone is not acquaintances for everyone. This person would be introduced for anyone in order to he doesn’t feel left out.

    1. Excellent comments Nelson. This is an interesting lesson. Acquaintance is a new word for me too. Sometimes I have used “leave taking” instead of farewell but I prefer farewell. It is important to understand that depending on the environment we are we have to use different ways to communicate our ideas.

    Each of three parts helped us to understand a difference between a formal and informal conversation.
    In the part 1 show us how we have to talk with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, employees, bosses…
    In the second part people can see what kind of words we can use speaking with friends and family.
    The third part shaw us that we have to be educated people and never allow anybody fell left out of conversation.

    For example if you want to write a letter to attorney or some instructions. You should use formal language.
    Informal language we can use for conversation between friends and family members.

    These 3 parts of the lessons, taught us about informal and formal language. Part 1, learn me to have a formal language with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, and employers, and Part 2, learn me to have an informal language with who is fleeing comfortable around me like my family and friends, But Par3, the important way to have a formal conversation and polite with someone we know him and we want to introduce him or her to someone we are respectful to him or her and I think all language is the same way. In my language, we are doing the same.

    Today I learned about formal and informal greetings and farewells.
    In part 1I learned formal greetings and farewells are used with people you´re not familiar or too close, like acquaintances, educators, employers and colleagues.
    In part 2 I learned informal greetings and farewells are used when you know the person well and feel confortable with them, like family and friends.
    In part 3 I learned that it is important to know the difference between both forms of greetings and farewells to use it appropriately to whom we refer.

  16. I’ve just finished my first lesson and I loved it. The audio-videos are understandable, excellent pronunciation and, not so fast for me. It’s really hard to understand when an English native talk to us but with this tools we are gonna have the opportunity to improve our listening.     1. In this lesson I learned that we cannot talk the same way to every people. Formal language must be used when we talk to Teachers, Pastors, Lawyers, Doctors, the President ofour country, the Major of our city, etcetera.
      If I’m talking to my friends I can use informal language and it doesn’t matter because most of people feel confortable with friends.

        The Lesson 1.1.2 is very important. In Part 1 it teaches us that in American English exist two kind of languages: the formal language and the informal one. Part 1 mentions some cases where we ought to use formal language. This type of language has to be used with acquaintances, colleagues, educators and employers.
        Part 2 shows us some cases where we might use informal language. That cases refers to our conversations with our family or friends.
        Part 3 mentions the importance of be polite by introducing our companions or whoever we are speaking or dicussing with, with people we are meeting. In that way nobody will feel left out.
