Lesson 1.2.2 – English Lessons With Maestro Sersea

Welcome to Year 1, Week 2, Lesson 1.2.2. Today we will work on your English listening and reading comprehension via 3 of our Conversation Topics for English Learners activities.

Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Hello, English Learners. During Informal Introductions, we normally introduce the friends or family members we are together with, with other friends or family that we meet and discuss with. This way, all the people feel welcome and connected to our discussion, and no one feels left out.

Imagine that you’re at a party with your brother and meet your best friend from high school. How would you introduce your brother to your best friend from high school? How would you introduce your best friend from high school to your brother?

Imagine that you’re invited at your sister’s wedding and meet your sister’s husband for the first time. How would your sister introduce you to her husband? How would your sister introduce her husband to you?

Imagine that you’re organizing a party at your home and have invited many of your friends as well as all your family to your party. How would you introduce your best friend to your parents? How would you introduce your parents to your best friend?

It is of key importance that we introduce our companions with people we meet and discuss with. It is the polite thing to do.

Part 2: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Time is very important to us. Some people say we have too much of it, while others say we don’t have enough of it. As English Learners, you will need to communicate and understand discussions and texts that have to do with time. What would you talk about when the discussion revolves around time? Here are a few suggestions.

Imagine that you’re late to work, and your boss calls you angrily because you were expected at work more than an hour ago. What would your boss say to you? What would you say to your boss?

Imagine that you have forgotten to bring your watch or cellphone with you and need to find out the time. You ask “What time is it?” from strangers on the street. How would you ask strangers about time? What would they likely respond with?

Imagine that you’re at home enjoying dinner, and you remember you needed to meet your friends at a club a half an hour earlier. What would you say to your family? What would you say to your friends?

In the United States of America, it is very important to respect time. People respect you more when you are punctual and are on time.

Part 3: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again. Finally, add a comment about what you learned from Parts 1, 2, and 3 in the comments section below.

Hello, English Learners. One of the biggest fears English Learners have is communicating in English by phone. Indeed, it is hard to comprehend English when someone speaks English too fast, or has a thick accent. It is also hard to understand when you have limited English vocabulary and practice communicating in English by phone. What would you talk about in English if you were to receive a phone call right now? Here are a few suggestions:

A friend calls you asking you to go out to a movie. What would you say to your friend? What would your friend say to you?

Your doctor calls, asking you to come for a medical appointment. What would you say to your doctor? What would your doctor say to you?

A friend from long ago calls you and asks you for money. What would you say to your friend? What would your friend say to you?

The important thing to know about successful telephone conversations is that you need to improve your English vocabulary and get as much practice communicating with others in English as possible.
