English Learners, for Formal Greetings and Farewells, imagine having a conversation with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, and employers using formal language. How would you start a conversation? What would you say?

Imagine recognizing an acquaintance at a restaurant you like. What would you say?

Imagine you’re on vacation and you notice one of your colleagues is sitting next to you, on the bus. What would you say?

Imagine you’re at a movie theater and that you notice your favorite teacher is sitting right next to you. What would you say?

Imagine you’re applying for a job and you’re interviewing for the first time with a potential employer. What would you say?

In American English, there is formal and informal language. We usually use informal language with family and friends, and use formal language with acquaintances, colleagues, educators, and employers.
