Then, we continue with Dialogue 5 from our English course, American English Conversations 3. Designed for beginners, each dialogue helps English Learners improve their comprehension and communication skills. You’re encouraged to read along and pronounce together with the video below. Once you finish, don’t forget to share what you’ve learned via the comments section below.

Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Time is very important to us. Some people say we have too much of it, while others say we don’t have enough of it. As English Learners, you will need to communicate and understand discussions and texts that have to do with time. What would you talk about when the discussion revolves around time? Here are a few suggestions.

Imagine that you’re late to work, and your boss calls you angrily because you were expected at work more than an hour ago. What would your boss say to you? What would you say to your boss?

Imagine that you have forgotten to bring your watch or cellphone with you and need to find out the time. You ask “What time is it?” from strangers on the street. How would you ask strangers about time? What would they likely respond with?

Imagine that you’re at home enjoying dinner, and you remember you needed to meet your friends at a club a half an hour earlier. What would you say to your family? What would you say to your friends?

In the United States of America, it is very important to respect time. People respect you more when you are punctual and are on time.

PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue below in English, then translate it and read it in your primary language.

Dialogue 5 — What Time Is It?

  • Natasha:    What time is it? We’re going to be late!
  • Tony:    It’s a quarter after seven. We’re on time. Don’t panic.
  • Natasha:    But I thought we had to be at the restaurant by 7:30 for the surprise party. We’ll never make it there with all this evening traffic.
  • Tony:    Sure we will. Rush hour is almost over. Anyway, the party starts at  8:00. But I do need help with directions. Can you call the restaurant and ask them where we park our car?

PART 3 — DIRECTIONS: Watch, read-along, and pronounce with the video below a minimum of 2-3 times. After you finish, let us know what you learned via the comments section below.
