Welcome to Year 1, Week 35, Lesson 1.35.3. Today we will work on your English listening, conversation and reading skills. We begin with a dialogue-related Conversation Topic for English Learners to help with listening and reading comprehension. Then, we continue with Dialogue 13 from our English course, American English Conversations 3. Designed for beginners, each dialogue helps English Learners improve their comprehension and communication skills. You’re encouraged to read along and pronounce together with the video below. Once you finish, don’t forget to share what you’ve learned via the comments section below.

Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Hello English Learners. Sometimes we are in the middle of an emergency and we need to call for help. Today’s conversation topic is “Calling for Help”. Imagine you need to make an emergency call. What would you say ? What would others say? Here are a few suggestions:
— There’s a car accident you’ve just witnessed and it looks like people are hurt. You call 911 Emergency. What would you say on the phone? What would the emergency operator say to you?
— There’s a fire in your neighbor’s backyard and nobody seems to be home. You call 911 to let the Fire Department know. What would you say to the emergency operator? What would the emergency operator say to you?
— Your child has been feeling ill with high fever. You drive your child to the emergency room and go to the front desk. What would you say to the nurse? What would the nurse say to you?
Sometimes we’re the only ones others can count on for help. We need to be emotionally strong and speak clearly in English to help them. What would you say or do during an emergency?

PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue below in English, then translate it and read it in your primary language.

  • Peter:   Hey! That car just ran a red light and hit that truck!
  • Gail:     Is anyone hurt?
  • Peter:   I don’t know … let’s call 911. … Hello? I’d like to report a car accident near the post office on Charles Street. It looks like a man is hurt. Yes, it just happened. OK, thanks. Bye.
  • Gail:     What did they say?
  • Peter:   They’re going to send an ambulance and a police car right away.
  • Gail:     Good, they’re here. I hope the man is OK.
  • Peter:   I know. You have to be so careful when you’re driving.

PART 3 — DIRECTIONS: Watch, read-along, and pronounce with the video below a minimum of 2-3 times. After you finish, let us know what you learned via the comments section below.
