Lesson 1.52.3 – American English Lessons With Maestro Sersea

Welcome to Year 1, Week 52, Lesson 1.52.3. Today we will work on your English listening, conversation and reading skills. We begin with a dialogue-related Conversation Topic for English Learners to help with listening and reading comprehension. Then, we continue with Dialogue 30 from our English course, American English Conversations 3. Designed for beginners, each dialogue helps English Learners improve their comprehension and communication skills. You’re encouraged to read along and pronounce together with the video below. Once you finish, don’t forget to share what you’ve learned via the comments section below.

Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Hello English Learners. Do you have many friends? Do they often ask you for advice? What do you tell them to do? Today’s conversation topic is “Giving Advice”. Imagine you’re giving advice to people you know in the English language. What would you say? What would others say? Here are a few suggestions:
— Your childhood friend is upset with her boyfriend. She asked you what to do, to break-up the relationship or to give it another chance. What would you say? What would your friend say?
— Your brother wants to buy a new computer. He has been saving money for it for many months now, but he’s still not sure if he should spend the money on a new computer or used one. What would you tell your brother? What would your brother tell you?
— Your best friend has just been asked to get married but she hasn’t responded yet. She’s not sure whether to say yes, or no. What would you advise your friend to do? What would your friend say?
Sometimes it’s best to help our friends think and make decisions for themselves. We can guide our friends to think more clearly and make the best decision that works for them.

PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue below in English, then translate it and read it in your primary language.

Dialog 30: Giving Advice

  • Layla:   Thanks for meeting with me during your lunch hour. I appreciate it.
  • Monica:      No problem. I’m happy to help. What’s going on?
  • Layla:   Oh you know, the usual. Should I take this new job? Or do I stick with my current one?
  • Monica:      Well, I think it’s time for a change, don’t you? They pay you late and you are unhappy.
  • Layla:   Do you really think so?
  • Monica:      I know so. And I’ve been listening to you complain for over a year now. Trust me. Take the job. What do you have to lose?

PART 3 — DIRECTIONS: Watch, read-along, and pronounce with the video below a minimum of 2-3 times. After you finish, let us know what you learned via the comments section below.
