Lesson 1.1.3 – English Lessons With Maestro Sersea

Welcome to Year 1, Week 1, Lesson 1.1.3. Today we will work on your English conversation and reading skills. We begin dialogues 1-3 from our English course, American English Conversations 1. Designed for beginners, these dialogues help English Learners improve their comprehension and communication skills. You’re encouraged to read along and pronounce together with the video below. Once you finish, don’t forget to share what you’ve learned via the comments section below.

PART 1 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogues below in English, then translate them and read them in your primary language.

Dialogue 1: Formal Greetings and Farewells

Paul: Hello. How are you?

Don: Fine, thank you. How are you?

Paul: Fine, thanks. (bus sound ­effect) Oh, excuse me—here’s my bus. Good­bye.

Don: Good­bye.

Dialogue 2: Informal Greetings and Farewells

Dick: Hi! How are you?

Helen: Fine, thanks—and you?

Dick: Just fine. Where are you going?

Helen: To the library.

Dick: O.K. I’ll see you later. So long

Helen: So long.

Dialogue 3: Formal Introductions

Margaret: Mr. Wilson, I’d like you to meet Dr. Edward Smith.

Mr. Wilson: How do you do, Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith: How do you do.

Margaret: Dr. Smith is an economist. He’s just finished writing a book on international trade.

Mr. Wilson: Oh? That’s my field, too. I work for the United Nations.

Dr. Smith: In the Development Program, by any chance?

Mr. Wilson: Yes. How did you guess?

Dr. Smith: I’ve read your articles on technical assistance. They’re excellent.

        I learned how to greet and farewell on either, formal and informal language. Also I learned how introduce people using the formal way.
        Some words and expressions are new for me, for example: ‘so long’, ‘international trade’ and ‘by any chance’; then, I got my vocabulary widened.

  23. Hi! I watched the video of three dialogues of Informal and Formal greetings and farewells. They are very common but they are not practiced daily. They make me do now and the pronunciation I learnt. More importantly two phrases “so long” and “by any chance” I learnt from them. Thank you.

      1. in this lesson I learned that there is a familiar language ( informal) and an official language ( formal) . familiar language is used when speaking with those close to us and official language is used with people with whom we need to have more distance. My prononciation is not very well .
