Lesson 1.4.3 — English Lessons with Maestro Sersea

Welcome to Year 1, Week 4, Lesson 1.4.3. Today we will work on your English conversation and reading skills. We begin dialogues 10-12 from our English course, American English Conversations 1. Designed for beginners, these dialogues help English Learners improve their comprehension and communication skills. You’re encouraged to read along and pronounce together with the video below. Once you finish, don’t forget to share what you’ve learned via the comments section below.

PART 1 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogues below in English, then translate them and read them in your primary language.

Dialog 10: A Crowded Theater

(Theater murmur)

  • Bob: Excuse me, is this seat taken?
  • Larry: No. it isn’t.
  • Bob: Would you mind moving over one, so my friend and I can sit together?
  • Larry: No, not at all.
  • Bob: Thanks a lot.

Dialog 11: Mistakes

  • Bruce: Where did John go?
  • Laura: He went to the drugstore. (Pause)
  • Bruce: To the bookstore?
  • Laura: No, I said he went to the drugstore.
  • Bruce: Oh, I misunderstood you. I thought you said bookstore.
  • Laura: How could you make a mistake like that? Weren’t you paying attention?

Dialog 12: Games

  • George: Say, Joe, do you play bridge?
  • Joe: No, I don’t play any card games. But I know how to play chess. How about you, George?
  • George: Well, I happen to be one of the best chess players around.
  • Joe: 0.K. Let’s play, then. We’ll see who’s the best.

    “I happen to be” is a new expression to me. So I can use that in others sentences.
    For example: I happen to be a skilled with math. Or, I happen to be your best friends.
    “Would you mind” is a expresion useful when we want ask a favor.
    For example: Would you mind turn off the light? I need to sleep. Or, would you mind wake up me early in the morning?
    Thank you for this lesson.

    1. Well, in this lesson I’ve found new words and expressions but I think that the most important is that this lesson help us having better our pronunciation and speakig.

    1. Hi, Hind. You might want to write in shorter sentences and capitalize the beginning of each sentence. What you wrote here is a bit unclear. Remember – 1 idea per sentence. 🙂

    There were several new expressions and verbs for me:
    is this seat taken?
    I happen to be
    To move over
    Misunderstand.
    I´m struggling with the pronunciation of “weren´t”. It looks easy, but when I play my recording, it just doesn´t sound the same like in the lesson. I´ll continue practicing. Thanks.
