Designed for beginners, each dialogue helps English Learners improve their comprehension and communication skills. You’re encouraged to read along and pronounce together with the video below. Once you finish, don’t forget to share what you’ve learned via the comments section below.

Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Greetings, English Learners. During Formal Introductions, we normally introduce whoever we are together with, with the persons we meet and discuss with. This way, all the people feel welcome and connected to our discussion, and no one feels left out.

Imagine you’re at a party with your father, and you meet the mayor of your city. How would you introduce your father to the mayor? How would you introduce the mayor to your father?

Imagine you’re at a university with your sister and you meet your English professor. How would you introduce your sister to your professor? How would you introduce your professor to your sister?

Imagine you bring your parents to your job for the first time and you meet your boss. How would you introduce your parents to your boss? How would you introduce your boss to your parents?

It is of key importance that we introduce our companions with people we meet and discuss with. It is the polite thing to do.

PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue below in English, then translate it and read it in your primary language.

Dialogue 3 — Formal Introductions

  • Dr. Smith:      Pleasure to meet you too.
  • Margaret:      Dr. Smith is an economist. He just finished writing a book on international trade.
  • Mr. Wilson:   Oh? That’s my field, too. I work for the United Nations.
  • Dr. Smith:      In the Development Program, by any chance?
  • Mr. Wilson:   Yes. How did you guess?
  • Dr. Smith:  I’ve read your articles on technical assistance. They’re excellent.
