Welcome to Year 1, Week 42, Lesson 1.42.3. Today we will work on your English listening, conversation and reading skills. Then, we continue with Dialogue 20 from our English course, American English Conversations 3. Designed for beginners, each dialogue helps English Learners improve their comprehension and communication skills. You’re encouraged to read along and pronounce together with the video below. Once you finish, don’t forget to share what you’ve learned via the comments section below.

Part 1: Directions: Watch the video, read the text below, then translate the text in your primary language and read it again.

Hello, students. Do you talk a lot about birthdays and your age with others? Today’s conversation topic is “How Old Are You?”. Imagine you’re talking asking others about their age. What would you say? What would others say? Here are a few suggestions:
— You’re at school and are talking with colleagues at lunch time. The conversation is about birthdays. You ask your colleagues how old they are. What would your colleagues say?
— Your friend invited you to her birthday party. You ask your friend her age. What would your friend say?
— You’re in the middle of the street and are asking people how old they are. People you ask seem to be upset by your question. What would you say to people on the street? What would people on the street tell you?
Normally, we ask people we know well about their age, while we don’t usually ask the age of women or people we don’t know well. Has anyone asked you about your age lately? What did you say?

PART 2 — DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue below in English, then translate it and read it in your primary language.

Dialog 20: How Old Are You?

  • Patty:   I’m really excited for Aunt Mary’s surprise birthday party this afternoon! Aren’t you?
  • Susan: Yeah! How old is she?
  • Patty:   She’ll be 55 on May 14 [fourteenth].
  • Susan: Wow! I didn’t know that my mom was older – she’s going to be 57 on September 2 [second]. Anyway, Aunt Mary’s going to be so surprised to see us all here!
  • Patty:   I know! But we still have to get all the food set up before she gets here … OK! We’re all ready now. Shh! She’s here!
  • All:   Surprise!

PART 3 — DIRECTIONS: Watch, read-along, and pronounce with the video below a minimum of 2-3 times. After you finish, let us know what you learned via the comments section below.

  1. Hello. I’m Danijela.
I don’t like it when they ask me how old I am. Mostly I tell them to guess. But I love when they think I’m about 10 years younger.
Thank you very much Maestro Sersea
